Paradise, Home and Away
The Hillcrest Victorian Inn, Ontario - This hilltop mansion, circa 1874, was just the retreat I needed after finishing a series of gruellng assignments. The spa is located in Port Hope, a well-preserved Victorian town on the shores of Lake Ontario, about an hour's drive east of Toronto and two hours west of Kingston. Hillcrest uses the holistic and organic Dr. Hauschka skincare line, and I tried the three-day Dr. Hauschka Detox Program that included "feeding my inner beauty" with ingestible bee pollen, a bath with spruce, rosemary and lemon that left me with glowing, healthy skin, and special no-meat, no-dairy meals that were gourmet quality.
For a fun escape, get together three girlfriends and book the Valenova Suite on the top floor to enjoy gabbing in your own private outdoor hot tub. Or go solo, as I did, and enjoy the views of Lake Ontario or hikes in six hectares of forest. As for my positive experience at Hillcrest, it's shared by SpaFinder, a global spa resource, which awarded it in 2007 with a Reader's Choice Award for best spa in three categories - spa cuisine, boutique spa (under 25 rooms) and going solo.

The Best Spas
LOCATION: Found not far from the shores of Lake Ontario in Port Hope, this Victorian home was lovingly updated and restored by owner Robin Dines.
ATMOSPHERE: A low key environment that is a unique mix of antiques, the owner’s family touches and small town hospitality.
SPECIAL TREAMENT: The spa area located in the lower level of the residence exclusively uses Dr. Hauschka products and offers a range of facials, massage, manicure and pedicures, all geared to soothe, de-stress and add a healthy benefit to daily life. Guests can find quiet time in a myriad of private areas from sitting rooms, side porch, saline pool and hot tub area or a lovely walk in the woods located in the lower part of the property. Indulge in a late night Jacuzzi in the treatment area. With the unique architecture of the Victorian home, there are rooms for single, couple or group.
EXTRAS: The uniqueness of this spa’s mix of nature and nurture comes through its distinct atmosphere as well as its creative cuisine, led by award-winning Executive Chef Jonathan Hosick. Spa Finder Reader’s Choice Awards for 2007 recently awarded the spa three awards: Best Boutique Spa, Best Going Solo Spa and Best Spa Cuisine.

| The Spa Train | April 22, 2008, 2:02 pm by Barbara Ramsay Orr - West of the City | |
The Spa Train
...The Spa Train is a unique partnership between 18 member spas of Premier Spas of Ontario and VIA Rail, the only such concept in Canada and possibly a world first.
Whether you envision a day visit, an overnight, a weekend or a two-or three spa journey, this new cooperative partnership makes the experience effortless.
...some time for shopping at Toronto's Eaton Centre before catching our train at Union station for the hour long ride to Port Hope and the Hillcrest Valenova Inn & Spa.
When we arrived at the station, Debbie McCoy was there to meet us, grabbing our luggage and ushering us into her already warm car. Five minutes later, we were at the Hillcrest, a restored historic home, now an Inn with nine rooms, and the first dedicated Dr. Hauschka spa in North America. We were just in time for a delicious and health dinner in the pretty dining room. Chef Jonathan Hosick concentrates on organic and local ingredients, and makes everything in-house.
This Inn struck me as a place for healing, tranquility and meditation. McCoy explained to me that women feel very comfortable here, either on their own or in groups. This may be why SpaFinder named the Hillcrest Valenova as the Best Spa to go Solo, as well as Best Boutique Spa and Best Cuisine for 2007. This is an overnight spa only - no day spa services are available, so visitors are settled in and unrushed. There is a welcoming, nurturing feel the minute you enter - perhaps because all the management team are female.
After breakfast the next morning, I enjoyed a Dr. Hauschka facial while Allie had a pedicure. We had time for a soak in the outdoor hot tub, with snow falling around us.

| Hillcrest Valenova Awarded Best Spa Staff by Glow Magazine | April 1, 2008, 9:00 am by | |
Hillcrest Valenova Named "Best Spa Staff" by Glow Magazine April 2008
Hillcrest Valenova has been recognized for the second year in a row as one of the best spas in Canada by Glow Magazine, Canada's Beauty and Health Magazine.
In 2007, Hillcrest Valenova was named the Best Detox Spa for its acclaimed Dr. Hauschka Detox Program. In 2008, it received Best Spa Staff designation as was reviewed as follows:
"This spa wins rave reviews for a number of reasons, but if we had to choose just one, it would be the staff. Each therapist shows pride and passion in her work, as well as a sense of nurturing that envelops guests completely.
All new hires receive David Wagner's book, Life as a Daymaker: How to Change the World Simply by Making Someone's Day (Jodere Group, 2003), and are encouraged to put the philosophy into practice (one time, staff members took a photo of guests who were celebrating an anniversary and surprised them by having it framed).
'We tend to attract mature therapists who are proactive in terms of teamwork,' says spa manager Simone Beitler. There's a remarkable energy here, and it's largely due to the staff.'

Where Else to Spa?
The cuisine, nurturing staff, personalized detox programs and Dr. Hauschka signature treatments are elements that distinguish The Hillcrest - A Valenova Inn & Spa.
Enter the elegant Victorian mansion, located on a quite street in the historic town of Port Hope, Ontario, and there is a prevailing positive energy. It's in the cheerful living room - with its comfy period-piece sofas, fireplace, grand piano and yellow silk covered walls - and in the sun-drenched ding room overlooking the backyard gardens and outdoor saline swimming pool.
The size of the inn - just nice guest rooms - allows staff to make guests feel like they're enjoying the benefits of personalized and customized programs and meals. |

Country Style Revival
The new five-night Stress Management Dr. Hauschka Detox Retreat at The Hillcrest – A Valenova Inn & Spa in Port Hope, Ontario, will give the gift of perspective in the middle of life’s most chaotic times. It’s rehab for exhausted people who work too much, have no time to eat or cook healthily and are burdened with tense shoulders that won’t quit.
Feeling your pain (in the neck, back and beyond), owner Robin Dines went to work with spa manager Simone Beitler and created a pakage with all the fixings: all-organic meals and detox menu; a stress-management workshop and private coaching session; seven spa treatments; a 45-day biodynamic detoxifying program, including vitamin elixirs and capsules; and, with no daytime spa activity interrupting your stay (the inn only welcomes overnight guests), the kind of privacy and country stillness you won’t believe until you check in.
It’s the first North American destination spa to exclusively use Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, so don’t skip the namesake Classical Skin Care Treatment. Every treatment includes colour therapy (blue light to calm, then yellow light to revive) and therapists add on foot, leg and arm rubdowns, and lymphatic stimulation – a soothing facial massage executed in a slow, rhythmic beat that’s meant to boost your circulation, but it can also send you into a dream state. “Four out of five clients fall asleep,” says Beitler.
Once your mind is calm and uncluttered, Dines will help you unload any remaining stress and teach you coping skills for the future. Trained at the Canadian Stress Institute (an internationally recognized and science-based organization), she will pinpoint your stress personality (there are 6 types, including The Worry Wart and The Speed Freak) an help you eliminate unnecessary stressors in your life. Rest assured – as a former finance executive and frazzled stock trader, she understands. She admits, “Quite often, my sessions end with hugs.”

| Hillcrest Valenova Wellness Spa awarded Connoisseur Status by Spa Finder International | July 10, 2007, 10:14 am by | |
Today The Hillcrest - A Valenov a Inn & Spa, Canada's premier overnight wellness spa was awarded Connoisseur status by Spa Finder Inc.
The Connoisseur designation puts the Hillcrest Valenova into the top two percentile of 3500 member spas around the world. Other Connoisseur spas include brands such as Canyon Ranch, Miraval and Golden Door. Three other Canadian spas share the honour of Connoisseur status - The Inn at Manitou in Ontario, the Fairmont Willow Springs and Ancient Cedars Spa at Wickaninnish Inn, both in British Columbia.
Premier Spas of Ontario has long considered the Hillcrest - A Valenova Inn & Spa as a world class property. We are pleased to now have two members of our organization recognized as Connoisseur Spas by Spa Finder, comments Liz Conway, Marketing Director, Premier Spas of Ontario, the province's association of premier spa experiences.
To be considered for Connoisseur status with Spa Finder, a property must first be invited to be evaluated, and then meet criteria including extraordinary ambience, luxurious accommodations, high staff-to-guest ratio, exceptional spa services, outstanding cuisine, and offering trend-setting programs.
The Hillcrest - A Valenova Inn & Spa is the only spa in Canada where guests must stay at least one night. The absence of day spa guests contributes to a tranquil atmosphere and a rare level of privacy. Robin Dines, owner of Hillcrest Valenova, shares, 'We wanted to create an environment where people can escape the pressures of everyday life and truly find a new level of well being. Surrounded by nature, a caring and intuitive staff, healthy meals and biodynamic spa products, we often see guests transformed during the course of their stay. This is what we call the Valenova Experience.'
Dines is a Certified Wellness Consultant and hosts 3-night retreats where guests learn how to handle stress in a positive, healthy way. The program was developed under the direction of Dr. Richard Earle, founder and president of the Canadian Institute of Stress.
Susie Ellis, Spa Finder's President, commented after her visit to Hillcrest Valenova, 'Robin Dines and her very impressive staff have created an elegant, unpretentious hospitality and spa experience, rivaling most destination spas all over the world. I was also touched by how dedicated the staff is to nurturing and caring for those who have gone through transitions or illness, and caregivers themselves.'¯

| Nightingale Award goes to Angel on the 4th Floor | May 9, 2007, 11:27 am by Hillcrest Valenova | |
2007 Nightingale Award presented to the 'Angel on the 4th Floor'¯
Today the 2007 Toronto Star Nightingale Award was presented to Anne Marie Langthorne, charge nurse at the McCall Centre for Chronic Care at Trillium Health Centre in Toronto.
Anne Marie Langthorne has been in the nursing profession for 20 years and comments, 'When I got the call that I was this year's Nightingale Recipient, I couldn't believe it. Florence Nightingale was one of my inspirations as a child.'¯
Wally Reinstein, a co-worker who nominated Langthorne says of her, 'Anne Marie is a really wonderful person who cares for her patients and takes care of her staff. She is an angel on the fourth floor,' says Reinstein. Langthorne cares for senior citizens in chronic or continuing care, most of whom are suffering from strokes, dementia and cancers. She considers it a privilege to assist families during the last stages of their loved ones' lives.
She was one of 127 nominees this year - the highest number in the six-year history of the award. Today she received a crystal star engraved with her name and a weekend getaway for two at the Hillcrest Valenova Inn & Spa in Port Hope. This was awarded by Robin Dines, owner of Hillcrest Valenova.
'When we heard that Anne Marie was donating her prize to one of her colleagues whose husband is battling cancer, we were reminded how blessed we are to have nurses like her in our system. We are treating Anne Marie to a spa escape of her own, and we'll insist she use it to pamper herself and a guest,'¯ says Dines.
As a Certified Wellness Consultant, Robin Dines conducts weekly wellness retreats to 'care for the caregiver'¯. These retreats are built upon twenty years of clinical research carried out by Dr. Richard Earle of The Canadian Institute of Stress. Dines continues, 'Our guests who are nurses consistently comment on how much they needed a body and mind break from routine. It allows them to return to work recharged.'¯ In addition to sponsoring the 2007 Nightingale Award, the Hillcrest Valenova regularly offers special discounts so that nurses can take time to look after themselves.
During his speech today at the Registered Nurses of Ontario Annual Career Fair, George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long Term Care acknowledged the dedication and contribution that all nurses make to our society and reaffirmed his commitment to further advance government partnerships with the nursing community.

Relax, Retreat, Restore
Close your eyes and imagine a place where luxury is limitless, where the whisper of soft music soothes the soul, where gentle scents waft in the air, and where your body surrenders to timeless tranquility. It's time to pamper yourself.
The Hillcrest - A Valenova Inn & Spa
The Hillcrest, built in 1874 by James Gooderham Worts, is one of the grandest heritage buildings in Port Hope, a town renowned for its 19th century architecture. Today, this Beaux Arts mansion is one of the region’s most luxurious retreats with elegant pillared portico and a sweeping covered porch that overlooks picturesque terraced gardens, hidden gazebos, woodland walks and vistas of Lake Ontario.
A spacious interior with high ceilings and lovely antique furnishings leads to a conservatory dining room with delightful ravine views. The nine gracious bedrooms, many with fireplaces and private balconies, offer quiet luxury.
The Valenova Spa concept of “Strength through Wellness” is achieved by nurturing the five senses, and an additional sixth sense, that of ‘well being’. Beautiful surroundings, bird song, fresh air, soothing aromatic therapies and a healthy cuisine, create a sense of well-being that embraces the Valenova Spa philosophy, and the principles of Dr. Hauschka. As the first North American Dr. Hauschka Spa, the company’s biodynamic product line of plat based, holistic skin care is used extensively in therapies at Valenova.
There are a variety of packages including the VIA Valenova Train, Wellness Retreats, or Dr. Hauschka Detox Program. Overnight packages priced from $375.

| Where Detox Rocks- Hillcrest Inn & Spa specializes in rejuvenation | January 6, 2007, 1:19 pm by Margaret Swaine | |
Where detox rocks: Hillcrest Inn and Spa specializes in rejuvenation Margaret Swaine, Citizen Special
It was the detox program that first caught my eye. I'm at the age where every bite seems to stick to my frame and every drink whacks my brain. The program promised not weight loss, but improved hormonal balance and radiant skin.
I signed up for the three nights at Hillcrest Inn and Spa as soon as I could clear the time.I'm a spa junkie.
This was one of many attempts to find a healthy bliss and it's virtually in my own backyard. Hillcrest is in the town of Port Hope, nestled on the shores of Lake Ontario and less than a four-hour drive from Ottawa. At Port Hope's centre is perhaps the best-preserved 19th-century Victorian streetscape in Ontario, with its classic Capital Theatre and many antique shops.
When I arrived at Hillcrest, I was delighted to see that the inn built in 1874 is even more architecturally impressive than I imagined from the brochure. I was greeted like an old friend with smiles and lavender cookies. Simone Beitler, the spa manager, came out to tell me about my program. I was then handed my special Dr. Hauschka products -- digestive cleansing capsules to take after meals, silica powder with bee pollen in the morning and an immune-boosting elixir, all made from biodynamic ingredients. Next, chef Jon Hosick emerged from the kitchen to talk about food preferences. I found out that he apprenticed at another great Ontario health spa, Tapatoo, where I've also enjoyed the meals. The days ahead looked very sunny indeed.
"The guests I have in significantly affect the menu," said Hosick, a 24-year-old dynamo who's obviously passionate about cooking. He explained that he always discusses meals with his guests, then tailors his menus accordingly. Want ostrich? Bison? You'll get it before you leave. Most everything is made in-house from as many local and organic products as possible. Meats are free of growth hormones and antibiotics.
The Dr. Hauschka detox program includes a strict lacto-vegetarian diet that also bans refined sugars. While animal protein, including eggs, is out, we decided that fish would be OK. In the hands of chef Hosick, I enjoyed such dishes as pan-seared black cod, trio of sashimi tuna, candycane-beet-and-chevre salad, juniper parsnip soup and summer berries with nuts. The food was consistently delicious and creative and I found the diet a joy to follow while I was at the inn. (When I left this nurturing environment, though, I struggled to stick to the plan.)
Each of the nine rooms in the spacious high-ceiling home has its own charms. Mine, called the Laura Margaret (after the owner's mother), has bay windows and a coral floral decor. From its walkout balcony, I gazed upon the pool and the 15 acres of forests. Lake Ontario glitters in the distance. The Valenova Suite on the top floor, with its 1,000 square feet, private outdoor hot tub and widow's walk, is popular with families or groups of women. The inn holds 26 and will allow a group of 15 or more to rent the entire place. During my stay, I saw couples and groups of four or six women and a few singles like me. It was always quiet and relaxing.
My detox program included four signature treatments in the spa. First, I had a Dr. Hauschka dry brush and detoxifying bath. Under the expert hands of a therapist named Anjum, I was scrubbed from head to toe until my skin shone like a baby's. Then I was immersed in a herb-oil-infused detox bath. On the next day, the same therapist gave me a lymphatic treatment; Anjum applied reflexology pressure to great effect on my feet and hands. She later wrapped my feet in hot compresses while massaging my face and neck. The treatment lasted for 90 minutes of bliss.
Later, I found a moor mud stone wrap and pine bath to be warming and relaxing, and it left my skin silky smooth. A Dr. Hauschka classical facial, administered by Beitler, the spa manager, began with a sage footbath and continued for 90 minutes of massage, lymphatic stimulation and colour therapy.
I found the treatments so enjoyable, I decided to pay for an additional one, an abdominal chi massage.
I left the Hillcrest with my muscles relaxed, skin glowing and my mind cleared of stress. The effect lasted for several weeks at least. Now, after holiday stress and excess, I want to return. This is a destination spa that beckons you back.

Hillcrest is one of Ontario's most nurturing wellness spas
by Anne Dimon, www.traveltowellness.com
Daymakers. That’s how the team members at The Hillcrest - A Valenova Inn & Spa, in Port Hope, Ontario like to see themselves. Owner/operator Robin Dines explains that the operating philosophy that drives Hillcrest is based on the book Life as a Day Maker by David Wagner. “Every staff member receives a copy of the book,” she says, “and each person’s individual goal is to go beyond the expected to try to make someone’s day.” They walk the talk.

Situated on a quiet residential street just a 10-minute walk from the historic village of Port Hope, this intimate enclave comes as a lovely surprise to a first-time visitor –the elegant Victorian mansion, gurgling fountain, sweep of gardens and majestic trees all help create the feeling that one is entering a special place. The estate also includes an outdoor saltwater swimming pool and patio, a gazebo for spa treatments and 15 acres of wooded trails - all overlooking Lake Ontario.

The inn's nine guestrooms are charmingly and comfortably decorated with antiques and period piece. If you're booking in for a "me break" ask for the Attic Hideaway. It's the perfect spot to spend time and just "be."
Inside the spa’s cheerful living room with its comfy period piece sofas, fireplace, grand piano and yellow silk-covered walls, our little group of gal pals is welcomed with hot towels infused with the scent of lavender and lavender-flavoured cookies.

The lunch that follows is, in itself, enough to “make our day.” Food here is all about organic and when possible they buy local and it's all made on the premises even breads and condiments. Today’s appetizer is a choice of Sweet Potato Soup with Fig Yogurt or a fresh green salad with sherry vinaigrette. The entrée selection is Lentil & Grain Chili with Cucumber Raita, Organic Beef Bourguignon with Pearl Onions & Button Mushrooms or Crab Meat, Asparagus and Almond Salad. Dessert is Vanila Bean Crčme Brulee or House Made Ice Cream. The inn is not yet licensed to serve alcohol, but they do allow you to bring your own which they will gladly uncork and serve.
When guests are here on a detox program – which is typically during the week with couples and girl friends coming in on weekends – Executive Chef Hosick works with the spa manager to customized offerings in keeping with the detox plan. It could mean no low glutens, no starches, no vinegar, no dairy or a combination of various.

We could have easily lingered over lunch in this sun-lit dining room over-looking the pool and gardens, but therapists beckoned. While my girl friends went for massages and facials, I was enticed by something called the Valenova Wave. Designed by Beitler as a signature treatment it’s a full-body massage using the signature Valenova mix of essentials plus massage techniques delivered mostly by the forearms. Yes. It does feel like waves washing over the body and lulling you into the depths of relaxation.
“Our intent is to have a wellness and holistic approach to everything,” says Beitler. Even a pedicure here is more of a holistic approach to foot care than what you’d expect. It includes a private room, a foot soak and even colour therapy - and we don’t mean the colour of nail polish.
Of course, as it is with every treatment at every spa, it’s all about the delivery of service and sense of nurturing imparted by the therapist. Hillcrest tends to attract more mature staff with a background in the field and a caring nature. They also tend to be multi-disciplined. For instance, my therapist is not only a massage therapist but an aromatherapist, esthetician and acupuncturist.
If there is just one overriding point of distinction at The Hillcrest I have to say it is the staff. There’s an honest passion, pride and nurturing that seems to live within each person. One senses it’s an uplifting place to work. Consequently, it’s an uplifting place to be. There’s a lot of good energy here.
And, about that "day-maker" stuff? It's true. Everyone seems to go above and beyond to be helpful, kind and caring. Go. I'd be very surprised to hear a visit doesn't "make your day."

Spotlight on Toronto: The Hillcrest Victorian Inn A Valenova Spa
By Lillian Africano
After my visit to Ste. Annes, my companion and I drove to the quaint nearby town of Port Hope, Ontario, where we would spend the night at the Hillcrest Victorian InnA Valenova Spa.
My first glimpse of The Hillcrest was impressive. The inn, which sits on 15 beautifully landscaped acres with panoramic views of Lake Ontario, looks like a dukes country home, with soaring pillars and a gracious entryway. The interior lived up to the first impression: antique furnishings and tapestries grace the common areas; a grand staircase leads up to the guest rooms.
My room, the Laura Margaret, was named in honor of the owners mother; her wedding picture hangs outside the door. I was delighted by the marble fireplace, the antique four-poster king bed and the big, thoroughly modern whirlpool tub. My balcony gave me views of Lake Ontario and the inns saltwater pool, the only one in Canada. Again, there was no television in sight, though one could be provided on request. A sensible arrangement, I thought, as the Hillcrest aims to be a peaceful setting for rest and relaxation.
The Hillcrest, formerly a sister property to Ste. Annes, was acquired in 2004 by Robin Dines, who began an extensive program of renovations and restorations and added the Valenova concept. Valenova derives from the Latin greeting valeo, which means wishing you health, strength and prosperity, Ms. Dines explains, and nova means new. We strive to ensure that guests experience a sense of well-being. Ms. Dines innovations included not only the saline pool, but outdoor spa gazebos, a new hot tub, new landscaping, new signature treatments, a new innkeeper, Rochelle Larmourand a star chef Elaina Asselin, one of Torontos top-rated toques.
At dinner, I quickly discovered what an artist Chef Elaina is. Not only are her dishes sublime, they are simply beautiful to behold. (I should mention that the restaurant, with its sweep of windows, is the perfect setting for all this artistry.) An amuse-bouche of daikon, ginger and wasabi woke up my taste buds just in time for the Corn Pepper Soup. The Heirloom Tomato Salad was the best Ive ever tasted (and Im from the state that produces the fabulous Jersey tomatoes!). Organic Grilled Polenta with a medley of fresh vegetables was exquisite. Dessert choices included a selection of Canadas raw milk cheeses and a peach pie with berries and fresh cream. I tasted everything. Chef Elainas healthy, organic recipes made me wish I could find a table like hers at home.
The quality of the staff at Hillcrest matches the cuisine. When I asked for feather pillows instead of the non-allergenic ones on my bed, they were delivered in a triceand with a smile. Turndown came with homemade chocolate.
The spa, located below the main floor, offers a full menu of massage, bodywork, hydrotherapy and esthetic services. Among the newer signature Valenova treatments is the Valenova Wave (1 hour, $120), during which the therapist uses warmed holly oil infused with the spas signature scent during a massage consisting of a gentle gliding motion to create a rhythmical, wave-like effect. The massage is aimed at loosening tension and easing tired muscles. For golfers, the spa has the Valenova Athletic Golfers Massage (90 minutes $165). A 45-minute pre-golf Thai massage helps loosen major joints and stretch the primary muscles involved in the activity. A 45-minute post-golf Swedish massage flushes the muscles, helps ease any after-activity pain and relaxes the body.
I chose the Firming Moor Mud Facial (75 minutes, $130) because the spa uses (and sells) Dr. Hauschka skin care products. I am a fan of these holistic products developed by the late Dr. Hauschka; they use medical grade herbs, harvested by hand and handled without the addition of preservatives.
My facial began with a thorough cleansing and toning. The Golden Moor Mud, which had been mixed with fresh goat milk, was applied to my face. My therapist covered the mud with a film of gauze and hot towels. As the mud did its jobto detoxify and nourish my skinmy therapist massaged my scalp, my arms and legs and feet, again using the Hauschka products. These head-to-toe ministrations left me with a lovely feeling of well-being. And when the mud was cleansed, my face was satiny smooth and had no need of makeup.
Regretfully, it was time to leave Hillcrest.
A standard room is $165, based on double occupancy; a superior room is $215; the Valenova suite is $265; price includes accommodations, breakfast and use of all facilities. Various packages and promotions are offered throughout the year; the Hillcrests Pink Ribbon Club offers a 10% lifetime discount on accommodations, meals and services to breast cancer survivors.

| Local Inn home to Canada's first outdoor Saline pool | August 1, 2005, 12:19 pm by Northumberland Business Times | |
Canada gets its first Destination Spa with an outdoor saline pool
Port Hope, August 1, 2005 The Hillcrest Victorian InnA Valenova Spa, announced today that it is Canadas first Destination Spa to offer guests an outdoor saline pool.
A saline pool contains water with a very mild saline solution, approximately 1/3rd the salinity of human tears (or approx 1/12th as salty as ocean water). The salt used is sodium chloride the same pure salt found in sea water.
The Hillcrests Spa Manager, Simone Beitler, comments, The benefits of a saline pool are manyno more red eyes, it soothes sensitive skin, is gentle on hair, and it wont fade bathing suits. Guests who have allergies find the pool an exceptionally soothing escape.
Saline pools are environmentally and ecologically positive. The water naturally maintains its PH balance, eliminating the need for chlorine or bromine type chemicals and their harmful byproducts.
According to Susie Ellis, President, Spa Finder, Inc., the worlds largest spa media, marketing and gift certificate company, Consumers are increasingly aware of what they put on their skin, into their bodies, and out into the environment. This trend extends into a desire for healthy water in swimming pools, hot tubs and therapy pools. The Hillcrest Victorian Inns Valenova Spa is on the forefront of this trend by offering an outdoor saline pool.
